Many lab planners understand the importance of placing biosafety cabinets away from disruptive air currents generated by personnel, doors, and even other BSCs. But how far away is enough? The answer, as you will see in this guide, depends on who you ask! NuAire Lab Equipment has partnered with biosafety expert Julianne L. Baron, PhD, CPH, RBP, CP-BRM of Science and Safety Consulting and with designer Jeff Kaphingst to creatively compare common industry guidelines.

Tip 3b for Class II, Type A2 Biosafety Cabinet Placement: Installation and Exhaust. At least 6" (152mm) of space should be kept accessible on each side of the cabinet for maintenance access. The electrical outlet to which the cabinet is connected should be accessible. The power plug serves as an emergency disconnect and should not be obstructed.
-
Tip 3a for Class II, Type A2 Biosafety Cabinet Placement: Installation and Exhaust. Biosafety cabinets used for work with minute quantities of non-flammable or explosive volatile toxic chemicals and tracer amounts of radionuclides required as an adjunct to microbiological studies must be exhausted through properly functioning exhaust canopies. A canopy exhaust transition is recommended to capture exhaust efflux.
