Erionite is an asbestos-like mineral that is associated with increased risks of lung cancer and mesothelioma. Exposure to erionite is most often found in road construction and maintenance workers who have worked with erionite-containing gravel used in road surfacing. Erionite is also found in natural zeolite products like pet litter, soil conditioners, animal feed, wastewater treatment, and gas absorbents. EMSL’s Asbestos Division tests for erionite via SEM, TEM, and XRD methods. To learn more, visit https://lnkd.in/eaZbAX39. In recent years, there has been an increased trend in determining and characterizing naturally occurring mineral deposits for asbestos, erionite, and other fibrous minerals. Samples collected outside of building atmospheres pose a unique challenge to analysis. Minerals can look chemically different based on locality and are often not the only mineral present. Therefore, it often takes a suite of analyses and a team of experienced analysts to characterize these samples. EMSL Analytical, Inc. has been on the forefront of naturally occurring asbestos (NOA) analysis. EMSL’s Materials Science Division performed analysis to determine presence of coal/fly ash in a water sample. The water was filtered and the residue on the filter was analyzed. The particles showed morphology and elemental composition associated with coal/fly ash. The ability to use various microscopy instruments proved invaluable regarding unknown particulate identification.
